Privacy and compliance
Privacy and responsible transactions can coexist. Mirage is designed to keep transfer relationships private without pooling funds or requiring users to hand over custody. Mirage addresses compliance at several layers of its architecture, which differs from other privacy protocols.
Screening
Mirage has partnered with Predicate to provide compliance screenings for addresses that use the application. Here is a quick TL;DR on how this works:
- After you deploy your escrow contract, Mirage forwards your address to Predicate to check sanctions, scam, and hack databases for illicit addresses.
- Mirage never takes control of your funds, so you can always access them regardless of the compliance check result. If the compliance check returns a negative result, you can withdraw your funds from the contract.
- If the compliance check is successful, Mirage provides a signature that is attached to your signal before it is broadcast to the network. This signature allows nodes that have Mirage's compliance API in their configuration to recognize that Mirage has approved your address.
- This process is immediate, and your funds are never frozen, held, or controlled during it.
We have taken extra measures by choosing Predicate as our compliance provider. Predicate provides further privacy guarantees by preventing its service providers from recognizing that requests originate from Mirage's API. This means they cannot use this information directly to train models on your addresses or identify your Mirage usage. The data is sent alongside data from all other projects that use Predicate.
The recipient address for your transaction undergoes a similar screening check, but the sender and recipient addresses are never sent together or linked at any point.
No mixing, no commingling
Mirage's careful architecture separates user risk by eliminating the need to deposit into and withdraw from a shared contract. This means there is no pool that can be contaminated and affect everyone indiscriminately. You are responsible only for your own funds and are not put at risk by another user.
Receipts and Records
You can generate PDF receipts for your Mirage transactions for your own bookkeeping or to share with an external party.
Node Screening
All Mirage nodes, called Nomads, similarly undergo a screening process before our API interacts with them. This means that you do not have to worry about illegitimate nodes working on your transfers.
